What is GC/MS Testing and Why is it Important?

What is GC/MS Testing?

GC/MS stands for Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry—a sophisticated analytical method used to identify the individual components within an essential oil. This testing creates a “fingerprint” of the oil that can be compared to reference profiles to detect any contaminants, synthetic additives, or adulterants.

This process uses two techniques:

  • Gas Chromatography (GC): This separates the oil into individual chemical components based on how quickly they vaporize. Think of it like a marathon: different molecules “run” at different speeds depending on their size and structure.

  • Mass Spectrometry (MS): This identifies and quantifies the separated components. It analyzes the structure of each molecule to determine what it is—much like reassembling a dropped puzzle to see the full picture.

By combining GC and MS, this method provides an accurate and detailed breakdown of the oil’s composition.

Every GC/MS report we provide includes:

  1. Basic Information: The botanical name, batch number, country of origin, and testing method.

  2. Chemical Breakdown: A list of identified compounds and their percentage concentrations, grouped by molecular class. This allows customers and professionals alike to understand the oil’s profile.

  3. Analysis Columns: You may notice two columns (such as BP5 and WAX), representing results from different chromatographic conditions. These provide a broader perspective on the oil’s makeup.

  4. Mass Spectra Graphs: These graphs visually represent the components found, showing peaks for each molecule based on its mass-to-charge ratio.
